In Memoriam: C Jan Swearingen

It is with great sadness that we record the death, on June 1st 2017, of Professor C Jan Swearingen. Jan Swearingen was a founding Trustee of the American Friends of the Soko Fund. Her interest in the work of the Soko Fund reflected her long time connection with Scotland. She first visited Edinburgh as the daughter of a Presbyterian minister who was participating in a short term pulpit exchange, and she maintained the connection by visits to Scotland over many years, most notably for an extended period as a Research Fellow in Edinburgh University’s Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities.

A regular visitor to Princeton, New Jersey, Jan combined research visits to the archives of Princeton Seminary Library with attendance at Friends of the Soko Fund Board meetings. March 2017, when her illness prevented, was one of the few that she missed.

A scholar and teacher of English and rhetoric for 35 years, she was a great enthusiast for the education of women, and especially notable for the number of young women scholars she mentored with unstinting help and guidance. Her connections with Scotland and her interest in women’s education made her an obvious choice when the Board was first constituted. Each year she put a lot of effort into our annual fund raising, making many new contacts for us, as well as being a very generous contributor herself.

We give thanks for Jan’s life. Both the Soko Fund and the American Friends will greatly miss her enthusiasm, her advice, her work and her generosity.
